Tortillas are one of the best "fast-foods" under the sun. Here, in San Diego County, fresh tortillas and fish tacos have attained the rank of "gourmet food" in some parts! Tortillas are a staple in my (Moroccan!) kitchen.
I love corn tortillas. My favorite ones come straight off a huge comal at La Palma Mexicatessen on 24th street in the SF Mission District. They are “Hecho a Mano” I’d often get a large number for a group along with some quest fresco and never made it home without eating one with the cheese. They are fat tortillas, which I love.
And, on a different subject, I don’t think it’s fair to pit corn against flour tortillas. The flour ones are made with fats and are rich-tasting. People are drawn to the richness. Not a fair comparison.
When I have fresh tortillas in the car one always goes down the gullet before I get home. I've been advocating for two winners, 1 corn and 1 flour for years but El Jefe believes strongly in a tournament winner. And actually we come to a consensus pretty quickly about final winner. It'll be interesting to see which wins this year.
I’ve been to the contest a few years ago. My favorite are the corn ones in Oaxaca, how on earth do they make them so thin? Maybe the clay comal enhances he flavor besides the heirloom corn.
Judging L.A. tortillas? What a great job. I must say, my faves are corn tortillas, especially those from La Cabana on Rose Ave., just west of Lincoln Blvd. I also like the corn tortillas at Guisado's. THey're so rich and chewy!
I love corn tortillas straight from the hand and comal that made them. A tortilla layered with queso Oaxaca and a couple of epazote leaves is a special treat for me.

One of my favorite corn tortillas I tasted this year was from El Indio in San Diego.
It’s one of the oldest tortilla companies in San Diego. There are many tortilla factories in the North County too!

I'm sure all that comes into play. Also being at the source.

I haven't had a La Cabaña tortilla for ages. I must try them again soon. I'm a big Guisado's tortilla fan too.

Yep, so delicious.
